This occured to me as I was watching the new episode: why would the Doctor have -his- cradle with him? Why is it in the TARDIS? When he fled Gallifrey oh so long ago, did he for some reason decide to take it along with him?

It really doesn't make much sense, at least not to me.

Yes. That. and why, when River was telling the Doctor who she was, did she seem to be telling him to read something written on the cradle and not the wee embroidered doodad she gave Amy?

I read another comment that explained River having the Doctor read the cradle. If the cradle was indeed the Doctor's when he was a baby, then the Gallifreyan writing on it could be his real name. If that's the case, since River can read Gallifreyan, she can read his real name. In order to read the lost language of the Time Lords, River must be part Time Lord herself. And the only part Time Lord baby that will use that cradle is Melody.

... I guess. It seems a little farfetched and loose-thread-grasping, but I think that's how the Doctor might have interpreted it.
