Fairyland is completely different.
Dec. 26th, 2011 01:09 amIt's time for another Doctor Who Christmas Special! With the power of DVR, I was able to pause and rewind certain parts and actually be a little bit thinky about the episode. Usually I'm not thinky while watching Doctor Who. Any way! Time for "The Doctor, The Widow and the Wardrobe"!
I'm sorry, but I must start at the end. Please excuse the massive capslocking. Ahem. PONDS. PONDS PONDS PONDS. AMY WITH A WATER GUN FOR CAROLERS. AMY AND THE DOCTOR REFUSING TO HUG FIRST. AMY CALLING RORY MISTER POND. THEM ALWAYS SETTING A PLACE FOR THE DOCTOR. POOOOOONDS I LOVE YOU SO MUCH. AND. AND AND AND. THE DOCTOR HAPPY CRYING. DOCTOR YOU ARE SO HUMANY WUMANY. /end capslocking
I said I was more thinky about this episode, although not a lot, just a little bit. One time I was thinky was at the very beginning, when the Doctor was running through the exploding spaceship. The Doctor and his reactions to the explosions made me think of the Tenth Doctor, mostly because of the massive difference in the reactions. When I think of Ten and explosions, I think of the serious face Ten has during most of them, ie his "Lonely God" deal. Eleven is so much different than that. He's much more light hearted (although sometimes it seems like he's too light hearted, I must admit), and this time around the explosions he was all, 'ack! must try to get away and not die!'
Another thinky moment happened when Madge is first seen in 'Narnia'. I know it's not really called Narnia, but the title of the episode and the prospect of entering a snowy forest through a box just makes you want to call it that. And because of that, I kept comparing them. I hollered at Cyril to not crawl into the winter wonderland in the box because the snow witch would get him and make him eat Turkish delight. Anyway, I loved Madge being in the snow land. In the Narnia books, when Susan and Peter get older, they don't go to Narnia anymore. But here is Madge, an adult, a parent none the less, in 'Narnia'.
I have to talk about Madge. Because she is really awesome. Despite it being 1938, she takes finding a spaceman rather calmly. And picking the Tardis door with a bobby pin! Although it really wasn't the Tardis. I still imagine her doing so when they find the real Tardis. Some people might not like her fake tears act, but I did. Because she is a mother looking for her children, and she will not anyway, future folk or not, get in her way. Which brings her to driving the Harvester thing! And being the strongest one there because she is a woman and a mother! (Although the mothership thing was kind of a bad pun.) Finally, after flying them through the Time Vortex and getting everyone home, she reprimands the Doctor for letting his friends think he's dead. Oh, Madge. You are so so awesome. Only you would say the Doctor is flying through the Time Vortex with such casualness.
Favorite quotes:
"Why are you doing all this?"
"I'm just... trying to take care of things. I'm the caretaker."
"That's not what caretakers do."
"Then why are they called caretakers?"
"Fairyland? Grow up, Lily. Fairyland is completely different."
"This is a military engagement. There's no crying in military engagements."
"Happy crying. Humany wumany."
Which brings us back to THE DOCTOR HAPPY CRYING. You know, I'm now thinking about the episodes of New Who, and I can think of the Doctor crying, but it has never been happy, it's always been sad. Always when he lost someone. Seeing him crying because he's happy, because he's loved and had friends is just. Bless.
A couple small things. Not seeing Karen nor Arthur's names in the opening credits made me sad. Although the end of the episode made up for it. Partly. COME BACK, PONDS. You would think the Doctor would do something to make the sonic screwdriver -not- be rubbish at wood. I think he just likes the extra risk. I was totally thinking of the Forest of Cheem from "The End of the World" when we first see the wood people, and the Doctor mentioned her! Yay!
And now I have to wait until who knows when for new Doctor Who. Boo.
