januar: Eleven from Doctor Who holding up a library card that has the First Doctor on it ([dw] library card)

I've watched two Third Doctor stories now, Doctor Who and the Silurians and The Curse of Peladon. Although they're both Three stories, that's about all they have in common. In Silurians Three is stranded on Earth working with UNIT. At that time he has Liz Shaw as his assistant. In Peladon Three is back in the TARDIS with Jo Grant as his assistant.

I'm not going to talk about the episodes (although there may be a comparison of Silurians and "The Hungry Earth"/"Cold Blood" later on), but I'm instead going to talk about my opinions of Three, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Liz Shaw, and Jo Grant.

I think one of my favorite scenes with Three is when he's doing science to save the world. Not sonic screwdriver waving, super technology science. But down to earth science, looking for a reaction under a microscope. Sometimes all the sonic waving gets a bit silly (that's why I love the Eleven-Rory banter about the sonic not working with wood), so seeing the Doctor having to work at it to get the right scientific solution gives me a bit of glee.

Then there are the little things at I adore about him. Like the fact that Three sings. He sings! In the first story it's while he's working on his car. Which is another thing I adore: he's working on a car! Hello, Bessie. And then he drives around in it! Not a bad driver, for a Time Lord who probably doesn't have a license. Finally, this Doctor can fight! It's mostly self defense and only if he has to, but still.

Overall, Three isn't my favorite, but he's not horrible.

The Brig with his guns is obviously the counter to the Doctor with his science. I don't have a ton to say about him, only that I love the banter between him and the Doctor.
DOCTOR: Lethbridge-Steward, what on earth is the point of my trying to discover things for you if you keep turning them down all the time?
BRIG: Then I suggest you discover something I can't dismiss.
DOCTOR: You're not exactly a little Sherlock Holmes yourself, are you? [lights dim] What the devil's that?
BRIG: It's another power failure. Come on, Doctor Watson.

He called the Doctor "Doctor Watson"! Hee!

We come to Liz. First off, the fact that they got rid of her because she was too smart pisses me off. I understand that the role of the companion is to be our link to the Doctor, to ask him about things we ourselves want to ask, but still. There is nothing wrong with a smart woman. "I am a scientist, not an office boy!" Liz, I adore you. And she's ginger! I don't know what it is about gingers, but I tend to adore those companions (like Donna and Amy). Maybe their red hair makes them extra feisty? But yes, Liz is awesome.

I wasn't able to get a really good impression of Jo. Also, something about her lips bugged me. But I did like the Doctor calling her "Princess Josephine of TARDIS" (Sir Doctor of TARDIS, anyone?) when he had to present her as royalty. Also Jo's comment right in front of the Doctor about how "the pilot was exceedingly inefficient." She does have snark, this one.

The next Classic Who dvd to watch contains Sarah Jane! I've only seen her in New Who era, so it's be interesting to see Classic Sarah Jane.
