januar: June from Avatar: the Last Airbender holding a cup with the liquid falling back in ([atla] june)

I finished rewatching Book 1 of AtLA last night. The results were much more pleasing than the 8 episodes before.

On names: names are a funny thing. Especially when you have characters such as the Mechanist and the Herbalist. That's why I decided to go back to the basic rule: two women, having a conversation. I would prefer them to have a name, but if not, I'll live. Kinda.

13: The Blue Spirit

Since I went back to the basic rule, I can say yes to the first part. There are two females, Katara and the Herbalist. However, they name speak to each other. So the episode has 1 out of 3.

14: The Fortuneteller

Many females! Many conversations! Even some not about men! :D The females in this episode are Katara, Aunt Wu, and Mang. There's also a female patron of Aunt Wu's who has more than one line. Several conversations happen, between Mang and the patron, between Aunt We and Katara, and between Mang and Katara. Some of the conversations do lean toward boys (Mang and the patron's conversation is all about Aang), but not all of them. A few of the conversations between Aunt Wu and Katara are about other stuff, like what Katara should have for breakfast, mango or papaya. It's a little hard to tell about the conversation at the very end between Katara and Mang. Mang's last line is said out of Katara's hearing, so does it count as a conversation? Also, she calls Katara "Floozy." Which is because of Aang. So that conversation is woobly. But thankfully, because of Katara's need to know about breakfast, this episode gives the series its first 3 out of 3.

15: Bato of the Water Tribe

As always, we have Katara. But we also have the introduction of June, a lot of nuns including the Head Sister, and the cameo returns of the Herbalist and Aunt Wu. Sadly, none of them talk to each other, so we can only give this episode 1 out of 3.

16: The Deserter and 17: The Northern Air Temple

I put these two episodes together since they both got 0 out of 3 with Katara being the only female with lines in either episode.

18: The Waterbending Master

Welcome to the Northern Water Tribe. Here we have Yue, the tribe princess, and Yugoda, the healing teacher. As well as Katara, but that's a given. And she's Southern, not Northern. Katara and Yugoda have a couple of conversation, and although the second does touch on the male species a bit, the first one has nothing to do with guys. So time for another 3 out of 3.

19: The Siege of the North - Part 1

Although we don't have Yugoda in this episode, we still have Katara and Yue, who talk about the Water Spirits, who are genderless. So although I was originally not sure, I'd say this has 3 out of 3.

20: The Siege of the North - Part 2

I'll be honest: I know this passes the first part, but I can't remember if Katara and Yue have a conversation or not. You would think I'd remember, since it was the most recent episode I'd watched. I think I was too busy looking forward to the end of the episode, where OH LOOK IT'S ZUKO'S SISTER. So... 1? out of 3 is the tentative rating of this episode.

It may be a little bit before I start Book 2. I had 15 (!) items come into the library between yesterday and today, one of which was a tv show. I also might do a review (but not a Bechdel testing) of the first part of the AtLA graphic novel "The Lost Adventures". I'm thinking after I finish watching a season, I'll review the part of TLA that corresponds with that season. And before I start Legend of Korra, I'll review "The Promise". I probably won't do "The Search" until all the volumes are out.

Oh, in case you hadn't heard? Two more months until new Korra! Woooo!
